Look out Wii Fit, here comes EA! EA Sports Active

EA Sports has decided to jump on the real-world fitness bandwagon, according to a recent article in Gamasutra, by launching a new fitness franchise exclusive to Nintendo’s console.  EA Sports Active is being considered the Wii Fit’s first potential competitor with its first title being simply “Active.”

A video game line for the ladies.

EA Sports Active is scheduled to launch next Spring and it’s target audience is, you got it,  “women seeking a simple, fun and cost-effective way to achieve a healthy lifestyle.”  EA Sports Active will retail for $59.99, and each copy will include a resistance band for upper body strength training exercises, as well as two specially-designed leg straps that hold the Wii’s Nunchuk controller to track lower body movements.

Competitive advantage.

Here are some of the more notable game features:

  • low cost–only $59.99–in contrast to the $89.99 Wii Fit
  • comes with it’s own resistance bands and leg straps
  • includes circuit that targets both the upper body, lower body, and cardio
  • “30 Day Challenge” fitness road map with 20-minute workouts
  • two player support (unlike the Wii’s single player target)
  • designed in collaboration with Oprah’s own personal trainer
  • works with existing peripherals like the Wii Fit board
